I am day dreaming about moving back to New Mexico (Alb. area) but I have to be able to earn what I earn here in Dallas (or close) because of my debt. Does anyone know what the salary ranges are for computer geeks with 20+ years experience? It could be network or programming.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Jobs
Mon, August 21, 2006 - 10:27 PMUm, well - it's still slow going for me, but I'm not a programmer & I'm a non-degreed professional.
Intel laid off just recently, so it appears that competition is pretty stiff. -

Re: Jobs
Thu, September 14, 2006 - 9:33 PMOkay, I got a temp job today thru Volt. The pay is lousy, the hours are typical clerical, but at least it's not too far from home & it's getting me out of the house. I've been going stir-crazy & I NEED to get back to work.
Guess the once a month day trips to Santa Fe are over for awhile.

Re: Jobs
Fri, September 15, 2006 - 8:03 PMI do programming in Tucson, but mostly web stuff like PHP, ColdFusion and database stuff.
ABQ is usually about the same on wages, so I'd personally expect about $50-60k in the private sector (including military and contracting) and about $40k in government, non-profit and university work. Network admin should be a little more.
I certainly don't have 20 years experience though.

Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 1:15 PMMy ex-boyfriend is a software engineer and was making more than $50k at Northrop Grumman in Albuquerque. He works for a smaller company and is making more. And he doesn't have no where near 20 years of experience. -

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Sat, March 10, 2007 - 2:11 PMThanks! I am still not decided on moving, though I want to. the job I have here in Dallas is still going well and a group of us are teaching ourselves new languages that will make us all more desireable. I may check out Grumman, though. -

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 10:23 PMI'm now working as a temp thru Westaff for the City of ABQ, but the wages are sad. I'm making under $10/hr, though everyone I work with agrees that I'm a great asset & very helpful & a hard worker & I'm always early or on time & I haven't called in sick even once.
What does that get me? A big, fat goose egg, because there's no way the city is going to hire me because there are any number of other city employees that would move in to take any job that became available & there is (supposedly) a hiring freeze on right now.
Yeah, I'm feeling pretty low sometimes, but I'm still cheerful & friendly & celebrating the times I'm having because I enjoy doing what I'm doing.
But in the end, they really won't appreciate me enough to hire me & I will have to go find something that will pay me & provide me with insurance. None of the placement services have given me a lead that amounted to anything & though friends have offered to recommend me at Sandia, I don't see anything forthcoming. Were it not from the rental income from my house in California, I'd be utterly screwed for moving to Albuquerque. -

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Mon, March 26, 2007 - 7:49 AMTry the Kemtah group. They may have something that you fit into. They are computer people so they expect better wages. Albuquerque is notorious for having unappreciative employers, but there are some who do appreciate and pay well. But what you expressed is why I am still in Texas.

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 6:35 PMThanks for the link - I will definitely connect with them.
I still remember how startled the folks at Westaff was when I came in to inquire about a payroll problem. They asked if I was going out for a Christmas party because I was dressed nicely.
And y'know, it never occured to them to submit me for a higher paying job somewhere else.
Oh, sorry - I was daydreaming again. :) -

I really wish we could edit our posts on Tribe the way we can on the Forums.

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Thu, April 5, 2007 - 10:17 AMMy experience with most of the agencies in Albuquerque are they are useless. There is no thought behind what they do, if your resume does not match exactly what is requested they think you are not qualified.
That is funny about the comment on how you were dressed. I was taught that you always dress your best. :) You definitely need to find someone else to help you. -

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Sat, April 28, 2007 - 12:45 AMSaw a job posting with the exact title of my resume - I seem to be a perfect fit for this job. I also got a follow-up email from Manpower suggesting that I apply for it.
I first submitted the resume to Manpower about a year ago & they warned me it might take a while to get it around; if the clients were interested, they said, they would cut a req for the position & I should apply. So...
I'm hoping to hear about an interview in the not-too-distant future.
My luck they'll call while I'm in New York next week. AUGH! Family stuff, not a fun trip, sadly. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Wed, May 9, 2007 - 6:49 PMBah! No response, so after another week went by, I called the rep at Manpower.
"Oh... oh... um... well, they didn't fill the position, but they wanted to... um... get some more resumes to review... um... um..."
Got home and BAM the link to the job offering was deleted. That's what passes for quality work here in the Land of Enchantment, folks. You have to remind them to yank the rug out from under you.
I'm thinking I have to send her flowers for doing her job so well. Not black roses, no... just simple bouquet a thank you note for her taking my calls.
Think it'll work? -

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Thu, May 10, 2007 - 3:39 PMI wouldn't waste any energy on it. Just send them a letter saying you are firing them and start looking in the phone book. Sometimes employers don't even know what follishness goes on with those people. I got a job in Albuquerque by joining a computer group that was related to my experience. -

Re: Software Engineer Re: Jobs
Fri, May 11, 2007 - 5:59 PMIt just gets better - I found the job relisted, so I re-tooled my resume on Monster.com a little and submitted for that one, too.
They can't say I'm not determined to find work!
I also got a tingle from a contractor monitoring contractor (wrap your head around that one) assessing the availability of qualified staff in the area before deciding if he wants to pursue a bid. Had a great conversation with the guy, but I think the deal breaker was my lack of any security clearance.
Best part of phone interview: hearing him describe the NASA goof that confused metric & English units resulting in the Mars Lander being reduced to a "lawn dart." Now, that's a guy I'd like to work for, right there.
