Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 6:02 PMI recommend planning on driving around for several weeks (it is the 3rd largest state in the union).
If you are coming from the west, stop at El Moro near Grants off I-40, there are some Anazazi ruins at the top of the mesa as well as a cool oaisi with poetry and messages written by conquistadores and priest on their way north from Mexico City and sout back.
More Anazazi ruins at Chaco Canyon, Aztec, Farmington (Mesa Verde 2 hours north of Aztec)
Albuquerque Sandia mountains has the longest, highest tram in the U.S. The view is amazing. It goes from the west face of the mountains to the peak, about 11,000 ft above sea level.
Santa Fe is fun, and there are art galleries all over, no matter what town you visit.
Also on the way to Chaco from Albuquerque there is a turnoff to Jemez springs.
Southern New Mexico has White Sands national monument, Carlsbad caverns, and something near Deming (can't remember what).
If you wait until July Roswell has a UFO celebration that is a hoot. If you are in that area there is a strange place called Bottomless Lakes that I think everyone should see.. And in the summer on the road between Vaughn and Clines Corners you can see the tarantulas cross the road in droves just before dusk. (there is a ranch that has Oryx near the highway too)
Lots more, but my brain is too tired to remember it right now.

Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 8:58 AMI love living here. A lot of folks however mainly in high school or just getting out of school want to move on but most end up coming back at some point. There's lots to do but you need to get out and look for it. With a half tank of gas you can completely change your surroundings. -

Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 9:19 PMHey Meg,
Just caught the thread. Sounds like some great thoughts already. I've been out here 14 years and I can't get enough of exploring the desert. I still have much of the 4 corners states to see. The sacred sites and the canyons.....the tumbleweeds & roadrunners......camping and ceremony. Heed the call.
Yeah, there are some good hostels around, amazing camping in every direction. Come during a festival.
cheers,
Matthew

Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 11:23 PMI recommend the Howard Johnston's Travel Lodge, just off of I-10 in Las Cruces. It is convenient to the Walmart and Long John Silvers. -

Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 10:59 AMThe walmart and long john silvers! LOL. Las Cruces is small enough that you can stay at the Howard Johnsons and visit the whole town, there are pecan farms north of Las Cruces on hwy 85 (North Valley Road) that are nice to drive through. Also an old fort 10 miles north, there is Mesilla old town that has a lot of fun shops and a haunted restaraunt. It is about 1 1/2 hours from White Sands Monument.

Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 1:11 PMi reccomend white sands national park campground in alamorgodo area, they have walk in sites that are to die for in the middle of gypsum sandunes. it is like $3 a person, with a $3 a person day use permit. you must pack it in and pack it out, that includes everything!!!! in the summer it becomes deathly hot so bring a lot of water, and realize that this is government land, so you cant party too much and they may search you. www.nps.gov/whsa
there is also a wonderful campground just east of las cruces, in the oregon mountains. i remember it being only a few dollars a night. www.lascrucescvb.org/html/_l...ing.html -

Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 10:51 AMThat campground in the Organ mountains over looks White Sands missle base so you may not be able to camp there any more. I know that often they close that park at dusk, sending everyone out and locking the gates. It may depend on what is going on at the base. Great views though.

Re: Places to stay in New Mexico.....???
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 12:27 PMalso, you CAN'T miss Northern New Mexico. I live in Pecos and it's beautiful here, but even more beautiful on the high road to Taos. There are some quaint little villages with views to die for. Driving from Las Vegas to Taos is another spectacular drive. You've gotta drive through the Gila in southwestern NM and through the Jemez, outside of Los Alamos. There are some FANTASTIC hot springs here in this state. Soak, soak and soak. If you're coming through Pecos area, you are more than welcome to stay with me and Bella and Pachamamma (my dog and cat!). Hope you make it here! -
