I'm new here and lived in the east all my life. I love New Mexico mainly for the landscape. The electric blue sky. The mountain ranges punctuating the desert. I live a 7,200 ft in the shadow of a 12,000 ft peak and I can be hiking in a wilderness area after only a fifteen minute drive - that's very cool, The people here are so much mellower than back east. In fairness, the problem back east is that there are just so many people. I came from a suburb of Washington DC, Fairfax County, where the 2000 census showed over one million people just in that one county - what's that like a third the population of the whole state here? The only thing I'm having trouble dealing with is the water situation. I used to be a sea kayaker. The mouth of the Potomac river where it enters the Chesapeake Bay is twelve miles wide. Out here a little creek literally 12 inches wide is called a river. I don't think I'll ever get used to that but I do appreciate water now much more than I did before and a trickle of stream gives me a happy feeling - ah, water!

Great Mother Whispers in the Canyon

I was walking back to my jeep down through a canyon near our home and praying softly in rhythm with the walking in a kind of mantra that I had made up. On the short drive up to the trailhead I had been struck by the winter beauty of the willows growing along the banks of the river. They were a purple-red color and bending slightly in the wind:
“Great Mother of us all
I supplicate myself before you
As the slender willows supplicate themselves
Before the winds along the river”
Repeating this over and over as I walked, not really taking it too seriously, just trying to focus my mind as I walked. But as I repeated it, I began to go deeper into the mantra, began to feel as though I were really giving myself to it more and more completely until I began to feel my body loosening, my will softening with the rhythm of walking, feeling myself opening and flowing, my body bending like the willows that I could still see in my minds eye:
“Great Mother of us all
I supplicate myself before you
As the slender willows supplicate themselves
Before the winds along the river”
And I began to feel a kind of oceanic peace settle over me - a very unusual feeling for me so quite noticeable - as I walked through the Ponderosa forest. Then our Gaian Mother whispered in Her female voice at once loving and authoritative, “you are not alone”
I smiled feeling gratitude and devotion wash over me as naturally as breathing. This was the only time that I had heard the voice of Gaia and Her words were reassuring beyond articulation. On the ride back from the canyon I crested an 8,000 ft pass and looked down upon the Sacramento mountains and the beauty of the scene expanded in my chest as felt bodily sensation of warmth. As it spread I felt a pure euphoria and thought, so this is what beauty “feels” like? How could I have never felt this before?
I give Her only my devotion and She gives me everything.

WRITING CONTEST FOR YOUNG WRITERS IN NEW MEXICO

Santa Fe, NM, June 18, 2007—Writers ages 14-19 in New Mexico are invited to enter the Young Authors Competition sponsored by the Santa Fe Short Story Festival. To attract the most diverse talent, the competition is open to all New Mexicans who are 14-19 years-old as of August 3, 2007, even if they are not enrolled in high school. Original short stories on any subject of up to 2000 words in length will be considered. Entries must be postmarked by August 3, 2007.

The finalists will compete for the four cash prizes to be awarded: $500 to the winner, $250 for the runner up, and $125 for the two honorable mentions. The four prize-winning stories will be read at the 2007 Santa Fe Short Story Festival by professional actors. Finalists (the four authors whose work is selected for a prize) may request a travel allowance if they live 100 miles or more from Santa Fe.

“One thing is clear—the world needs to hear the voices of young writers,” asserts David Olson, Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Short Story Festival. “One amazing way to reach out into the world with a strong voice is in the form of the short story.”

Tribal TranceFormation II - FIRE Wisdom

3SidedWhole. This coming weekend, June 2, is the second of Club Whole's Tribal TranceFormation events this season, and will celebrate the element Fire. We're planning a multitude of fire-based activities, ceremonies and art projects, fire-dancers and music for this gathering, and we invite you to participate and share the fire!

Theme: Solar Energy
Color: Reds and Yellows
Smell: Pinon/cedar smoke
Taste: Hot, firey chile
Sound: Whoooomph!

Cost:
Free for members; $15 for a weekend pass. A yearlong General Membership costs $50, or $25 for low-income/artists.

Schedule:
Participants are welcome to arrive early, camp out Friday night and help set up the event. Campfire and drumming will most likely take place the first night, including a possible appearances by Eric McEuen & Matthew Blank on acoustic guitar. .

On Saturday during the daytime we'll be doing a number of creative activities, including building incendiary artworks, creating Raku pottery, building and cooking with solar ovens, and much much more. If you can dream it - bring it!

There are LOTS of ways you can participate in helping to make this event magical.

We especially need Greeters, Rangers, and Fire-Safety people. Please Contact Us if you'd like to sign up for shift.

We encourage you to share your art with us, whatever medium it may be. We are a community that supports radical self-expression.

If you'd like to burn your artwork - you MUST contact our Art Coordinator for placement and safety issues.

This is a family-friendly event; anyone under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian.

Ethiopian food

Is there a reason why we don't have an Ethiopian restaurant anywhere in this state? I've looked everywhere in ABQ, but there are none. I haven't heard of one in SF either. Sadly enough the one Afghani restaurant we used to have in ABQ also closed down a few years back.

looking for a place to stay in santa fe for 6 weeks may 28th-july 10th

Hey friends, and friends of friends,

I will be in santa fe for 6 weeks or so
this summer for a circus workshop with
Wise Fool, and I need a place to stay.
I don't need much, just a place to rest
my head.

I can spend a total of $400 for the six
weeks, but I am more than willing to
help with cooking and cleaning, laundry
etc. I don't take up much space and I
am easy to get along with. I would also
be willing to do some trade in exchange
for rent, depending on if any of my
skills overlap with your needs. I'm
good at sewing and other crafty-ness.

I will be there from May28th-July10th
give or take a day on either side.

Coming to Santa Fe on 5/28

Hi All...

I'm going to be revisiting Santa Fe this coming weekend. The last time I was in the area, tribe and it's network didn't exist. This trip, I'm hoping to connect with some folks I might have never met, were it not for tribe... My family has a lot of history out there, and I always feel as if I'm coming home when I visit. Santa Fe has always been a place I've "run" through kind of quickly, based on the mass tourism and my general dislike of "All That", but now that my best friend is moving there, I am more willing to let my pre-conceived notions go and open myself up to discover new parts and new people there. (was that a run-on sentence, or what?) Any suggestions and tips on what to do/see or of any gatherings would be really appreciated... Sending love & light from Cali

On September 26th an InterFaith group dedicated to ending the war in Iraq went to Sen. Domenici's office to read the names of men and women who have died in the war in Iraq. They were invited to take the elevator up to the Senator's office and when they got into the elevator staff members turned the power off and the 9 peaceful people read the names in the elevator they were trapped in.
They were arrested afterwards.

The Court House is at the corner of 5th & Gold, 1 block south of Central. Please come and bring your Peace and Antiwar signs - WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!!

Actually only 8 of us are going to trial, they dropped the charges against Jordan who was 15 at the time of the incident way back on September 26th, but Fr. John, Michella, Jan, Bruno, Sansi, Ellie, Philip and myself would really appreciate your attendance inside the courtroom and outside in front of the Courthouse. The courtroom is small so people will have to rotate in and out with the people on the street protesting the war, and we need room for our own families, loved ones and witnesses. Please show respect for the proceedings when you are in the courtroom because unruly behavior would only reflect badly on the defendants and we are potentially looking at 30 days in jail.

Starting my plans for cross country trip

I'm new and am starting my plans for my cross country trip from Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL than down to The Keys. I'm hoping I can leave on or about May 1st. Before than, I would hopefully like to make a couple of connections between here and there. Maybe find someone willing to play tour guide or suggest some interesting place / things to see. I'll be traveling hwy 10 from coast to coast.

Medical marijuana has one last chance in New Mexico

Hello Fellow New Mexicans!

A bill that would have allowed qualified patients suffering from certain illnesses, such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and epilepsy, to use medical cannabis for relief of their symptoms was voted down in the House last week, 36-33. The bill was The Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act (SB 238). This is devastating news, given that a) marijuana has a clearly demonstrated medical use (see, for example, the White House-commissioned Institute of Medicine report from 1999: http://books.nap.edu/html/marimed/) and b) marijuana will continue to be bought and sold on the black market where no one gets carded, quality is unregulated, and supply is uncertain.

The Senate has added SB 238's fundamental language into another bill, SB 523, in order to give the legislation a second shot at passing. But in order for that to happen, we need to contact the legislators who voted against SB 238 to encourage them to change their vote. Below are the legislators who voted against it. Please please please contact your rep. (if they're on the list) to encourage them to stand up for compassion and reason by voting for SB 523. Santa Fe Friday

Way to go, Santa Fe! Had a wonderful time in town, even if I didn't get to walk around quite as much as I might have liked to. The cooling trend in the weather made it so pleasant for strolling & casual wandering.

Tecolote Cafe was very pleasant for breakfast, but Tomasita's was fantastic; better even than I remembered from my previous visit. We arrived there at 2 PM, just as the lunch crowd was leaving, so parking was available & the service & food were superb. I could not have asked for a better experience for my husband's first visit.

There was an arts & crafts show setting up in the plaza, so we wandered all around the periphery, touring shops & museums. It was much more crowded on a Friday than it was on a Wednesday, but almost everyone was pleasant or at least civil, though everywhere we went, someone would mention San Diego, which made us wonder if we had it stamped on our foreheads.

We saw some really playful sculptures that would really do well for yard art for our big corner lot. I'll have to price some of them online before we make a return trip.

The Situation in Hell

The following is supposedly an actual question given
on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term.
The answer by one student was so "profound" that
the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet,
which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure
of enjoying it as well.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat)
or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using
Boyle's Law
(gas cools when it expands and heats when it is
compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is
changing in time. So
we need to know the rate at which souls are moving
into Hell and the
rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can
safely assume
that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave.
Therefore, no souls
are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look
at the different religions that exist in the world today.
Most of these religions state that if you are not a member
of their religion, you will go to Hell.

Since there is more than one of these religions and
since people do not belong to more than one religion,
we can project that all souls go to Hell.

With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect
the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.
Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell
because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature
and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume
of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate
at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure
in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase
of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will
drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during
my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before
I go out with you", and take into account the fact that I went
out with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus
I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over.

The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over,
it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is
therefore, extinct . . . leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the
existence of a divine being which explains why, last night,
Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A."

Hey everyone! Here's a fantastic opportunity to participate in a FREE workshop about "Leave No Trace" practices, May 20 and 21 in the new Ojito Wilderness Area just north of 3sidedwhole (North or Rio Rancho, in Sandoval County).

First off, let me say that "Leave No Trace" is one of the core principles of the Burning Man project, and is an essential world-view to cultivate. So I want to see as many of us from this community participate. This is important!

Secondly, we are incredibly lucky to have Mike Bilbo (aka Mirrorman) generously leading this training. Mike works for the BLM in the Socorro district, but he has also worked in Nevada and was instrumental in helping Burning Man acquire its special use permit in the 90's. He is deeply committed to this work, and has taught Leave No Trace trainings to many, many people all over the country.

And he assures me that it will be FUN!

Essentially what's involved is a 2 day trip, camping out overnight, and a hike through a range of different land types, from pristine to highly impacted. Along the way, participants will be taught to lead "mini-trainings" that illustrate how to successfully Leave No Trace. At the end, participants will be able to lead the trainings to others.

There is a little bit to coordinate in advance, so if you're interested, please contact Mike soon, at the number below. He's sent along some more info (see below) about the course as well. Call/email Mike pronto if you're interested.

The Trainer Course is a vital component of the nationwide Leave No Trace program. It is a shortened version of the Master course. The Trainer Course is designed for educators, Girl and Boy Scout leaders, guides, Burning Man members, agency employees and other outdoor enthusiasts and professionals. LNT Trainer courses emphasize skills and techniques essential to LNT minimum impact outdoor ethics and education. However, LNT Trainer courses do not teach basic travel, camping or other outdoor skills, nor do they provide outdoor instructor certification.

Trainer Course participants gain the skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics to their clients, friends and family. Participants learn the concepts of Leave No Trace and prepare to teach Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of settings-schools, camps, parks, wilderness and front country areas. Workshop topics include the underlying ethics and seven principles of Leave No Trace:

Plan Ahead and Prepare Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces Dispose of Waste Properly Leave What You Find Minimize Campfire Impacts Respect Wildlife Be Considerate of Other Visitors

The LNT curriculum focuses on techniques for learning and teaching minimum impact outdoor ethics. LNT courses do not teach specific outdoor skills such as mountain climbing, river crossings, camping, etc. However, due to the nature of the Leave No Trace program, the Trainer Course is taught in an outdoor setting. Engaging in outdoor activities involves inherent or other risks and dangers that can lead to injury, property damage or even death. Individuals interested in participating in a LNT course should have basic outdoor travel and camping skills and be in reasonably good physical condition before attending a course. Participants are responsible for their own safety, and assume responsibility for injuries resulting from the inherent risks of recreational activities.

Core Components for Trainer Course Curriculum

1. A minimum of 16 total hours of experiential instruction, 10 hours of which must be conducted in the field. One night camping will occur. 2. The role and function of a Leave No Trace Trainer. 3. The principles and ethics of Leave No Trace. 4. Teaching skills and techniques and student learning styles. 5. At least one student led teaching exercise by each participant. 6. Overview of the national Leave No Trace program. 7. The role and function of Leave No Trace, Inc.

Trainer Course Completion

Upon successful completion of a LNT Trainer course, each participant will become a Leave No Trace Trainer and receive a completion certificate from LNT, Inc. Successful completion of the course requires participation in all course activities and teaching exercises. Those who complete the Trainer course are equipped to:

Understand, demonstrate and teach state of the art minimum impact techniques for friends, family or community groups; Lead a discussion on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic.

It's OURS! Now what do we do?

It's still not completely finished *sigh* but we closed escrow on a new house in Ventana Ranch today. It's one of the last in the subdivision and they really left a lot until the last minute. Near as we could figure, it had something to do with model homes for the new Ventana Ranch West development being more important than finalizing homes they'd already contracted to build.

Now the really serious stuff starts... sorting through all the JUNK we need to get rid of before we move. Lots of armwrestling with the husband to follow...

Oh, right - I'm from San Diego, CA and I have family in Albuquerque, Los Alamos, Espanola, as well as those I'm leaving behind in SoCal. I'm relocating to enjoy living in a new home, because I love the Southwest and I'm ready for a change.

Any tips, pointers, relocation advice would be helpful at this point. Scoffers and irritated local folks are also welcome - as a San Diego native, I know what it's like to have people invade your home town and start making changes. One sunny Rose Bowl and 40,000 people move to San Diego from New Jersey!

I think We want to move here- either Santa Fe or Albequerque

I don't even know if I spelled that right. my husband and I have been talking about moving here for awhile now. We've never been but read so much and we are big "foodies" and outdoorsy. But I am afraid of snakes and big spiders- eek! How do you deal? Anyway, just wondering about the job market out there, it's awful here (northern NW- WA). We wouldn't be moving with jobs waiting for us, I'm sure. It looks like there are mostly government jobs out there, here those are hard to get.. ..Also we have dogs, is it doggie friendly?
We would have to sell our house and look for one and buy before we went. Where are places that are nice to live (as in not scary, we're not rich! AT ALL)? At least, where WOULDN'T we want to live? Housing looks a little $$$ out there, so we would be busting the seams on the bank account at first...

I miss it all so much. The food! Los Cuates!! Rio Grande Cantina! OMG, I dream of a real relleno with both green and red!

I miss the people most of all though. So laid-back and down-to-earth. Minding thier own business instead of everyone elses.

Then there is the beauty, the horizon, the sunsets, the mountains.

My wife and I will be Moving to the Albuquerque area in May and we're absolutely ecstatic because it has been a long time dream of hers to move to the 'Land of Enchantment' and as a native Floridian, I'm happily surprised to find that her excitement over our upcoming move is quite contagious :)

Moving to Northern NM

Fellow New Mexicans,
I'm a New Mexican (from Los Alamos) stuck out here on the East Coast. I want to come back to NM or CO, but I'm not sure what the job situation/economy is like out there. I'm thinking about uprooting and coming back without anything lined up beforehand--I'm finding it really difficult to get a job from far away. I can go for a few months without a job, but not much longer. I have a master's in public policy, so would prefer to work for a non-profit, or maybe state/local government. Anyone have any words of wisdom? Know of any job openings? Any advice on cool places to live in SF or Alb.?

I'm planning a trip to northern NM for July 4 weekend, and was buzzing around Google maps when I came across this:

It looks like a regular neighborhood just to the west of Rio Rancho, but there's nothing there. If you switch to the satellite map, all of the streets are dirt and there are no houses there.
I checked out the Rio Rancho web site, and Googled, but couldn't find out what this place is. Does anyone know?

Also, any suggestions for things to do in northern NM? I'm going to be in ABQ, Santa Fe, Taos, Questa, Eagle Nest, Las Vegas and Pecos. I'm looking for non-touristy stuff mainly.

Spring is my favorite season in New Mexico.
There's such a stark contrast between winter and the rest of the year. It all seems so completely dead in the winter. Now spring has arrived in the high country & I'm loving it!
